FAITH AS A GRAIN OF MUSTARD SEED
Matthew 17:14-21 And when they
were come to the multitude, there came to him a certain man, kneeling down to
him, and saying, Lord, have mercy on my son: for he is lunatick, and sore vexed:
for ofttimes he falleth into the fire, and oft into the water. And I brought him
to thy disciples, and they could not cure him. Then Jesus answered and said, O
faithless and perverse generation, how long shall I be with you? how long shall
I suffer you? bring him hither to me. And Jesus rebuked the devil; and he
departed out of him: and the child was cured from that very hour. Then came the
disciples to Jesus apart, and said, Why could not we cast him out? And Jesus
said unto them, Because of your unbelief: for verily I say unto you, If ye have
faith as a grain of mustard seed, ye shall say unto this mountain, Remove hence
to yonder place; and it shall remove; and nothing shall be impossible unto you.
Howbeit this kind goeth not out but by prayer and fasting.
The multitude described here
probably consisted of not only the disciples of Jesus, but also many persons,
who were benefited by his ministry. It was the day after the
transfiguration of Jesus. In this group of people, who attended on him, there
were also, scribes, who were making inquiries as to who Jesus was, in attempt to
in order to impress the crowd that they were more intelligent than Jesus.
At this time the multitude saw a
certain man kneeling down to Jesus and saying, "Lord, have mercy on my son".
This cry,
"Lord, have mercy", helps a great deal. Jesus often gets moved and will
have compassion on the one, who calls for help from him. The man was saying to
Jesus that his son was lunatic, and being sore vexed falls in to fire many
times. He also complains to him, against the disciples that he brought his
son to the disciples of Jesus, but they could not cure him. Then Jesus was
asking them, how long he would have to be with them, to teach about faith, and
healing. Then Jesus again turned toward the man, and rebuked the devil.
The devil departed out of him, and the child was cured from that very hour.
Seeing this, the disciples of
Jesus asked him, why they could not cast out devil out of the man's son.
Jesus admonishes them that if they did not have faith, and their lack of faith
did not bring about results. Jesus tells them that if only they had as
little faith as a grain of mustard seed, they could ask the mountain to be
removed from a place and be placed at a distant place, and that nothing shall be
impossible to them.
Dear Friend,
Believe in Lord Jesus Christ. He is the Savior. Be born
again to receive eternal life.
What
does it mean to be born-again?
John 3:3-5 "Jesus answered
and said unto him, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born again,
he cannot see the kingdom of God. Nicodemus saith unto him, How can a man be
born when he is old? can he enter the second time into his mother's womb, and be
born? Jesus answered, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born of
water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God".
God bless you.
